LINCOLN SQUARE — A new executive director has taken the reins of a Lincoln Square food pantry as the nonprofit continues to see an increase in demand from the community.
The Friendship Center, 2711 W. Lawrence Ave., was founded in 1969 and serves more than 70,000 people in Albany Park, Lincoln Square, North Park, Ravenswood and West Ridge.
Requests for food assistance spiked during the pandemic and remain high due to various factors, including the arrival of thousands of migrants starting in 2022, rising grocery costs attributed to inflation and other disruptions across the food supply chain and neighbors aging in place on a fixed income, according to the nonprofit.
