Jul 5    Theatre Y presents Stories of the Body

Theatre Y is pleased to present the world premiere collection of four one-acts, STORIES OF THE BODY, by András Visky.

Reuniting long-time collaborators Theatre Y Artistic Director Melissa Lorraine and Romanian-Hungarian playwright, poet, and essayist, Andras Visky, Stories of the Body, will be co-directed by Lorraine and Andrej Visky (his son), and designed by Péter Szabó. Two of the four one-acts will be performed in changing combinations on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and two Mondays at 7:30pm. All four plays will be performed on Sundays at 2pm in a new order every Sunday. There are 20 different ways to experience STORIES OF THE BODY. A detailed calendar can be found on our ticket site:
https://theatre-y.ticketleap.com/stories-of-the-body/details

Visky's plays explore the themes of gender, justice, and trauma. The four plays are about the bodies of women in history.

Every single performance of Stories of the Body is presented FOR FREE thanks to the Free Theater Movement.

Introducing

“Lina”- A play based on the trauma of a friend, Lina is a whimsical exploration of the mutilated body, the moment a beautiful, capable body loses its mobility. This once-never-again-dancer excavates all that is beyond movement to learn the still dance of the dragonfly and the love and forgiveness that is still within reach. Lina is played by ensemble member and Suzuki ensemble trainer Laurie Roberts. It is directed by Melissa Lorraine.

"Eva"- A play based on an interview with a Hungarian sex worker located in Budapest. Born Roma, unwanted, abused, and sold, Eva struggles to claim a life of her own based on trust and dignity. This text explores the traumatized psyche of a true innocent who will redefine happiness if this world is determined to consume the weak. Eva is played by Theatre Y artistic director Melissa Lorraine and directed by Andej Visky.

"Theresa"- A play based on the life of Theresa of Calcutta, a modern Antigone, who felt a call to care for the unburied. This strange necrophilia, blinds her to the possibilities of living. When the soul eclipses the body, only to be left in cosmic silence, we face the terrifying possibility that a love for God can forsake all others. Theresa is played by ensemble member Katie Stimpson and directed by Melissa Lorraine.

"Artemisia"- A play based on the life of Artemisia Gentileschi, the first professional female painter of the Western world. She painted violent, revolutionary masterpieces amidst her father's public trial against Agostino Tassi, her art tutor and rapist. Her life and work became a rebellion against a society where a woman is considered property. Artemisia is played by ensemble member and managing director Katie Sherman and directed by Andrej Visky.

Water will be provided and drinks will be available for purchase on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Water and light snacks will be provided and there will be drinks available for purchase on Sundays.

Jul 12    Theatre Y presents Stories of the Body

Jul 24    Japanese War Brides in Post World War II America
During the Allied Occupation of Japan and the Korean War, approximately 13,000 Japanese women immigrated to the United States as brides to American servicemen. Although U.S. immigration law excluded the Japanese from entering the country, a series of Congressional acts eventually allowed Japanese women to enter the U.S. in much the same way as the so called “picture brides,” though this time they entered as wives to American men.

This presentation looks at the marriages of Japanese women and American servicemen, beginning with a discussion of the American Red Cross Bride Schools that sought to mold Japanese women into good American housewives. Second, it looks at Japanese war bride clubs in the United States, such as the Cosmo Club, which was founded in Chicago in 1952 under the auspices of the Chicago Resettlers Committee.

Sonia Gomez is a historian of the modern United States. Her research and teaching focus on the intersections of race, gender, and immigration. Sonia earned a PhD in history from the University of Chicago in 2018, and is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard University.

Her book project, “Good Wives, Wise Mothers: Race, Gender, and Belonging in the Making of Japanese America,” investigates the ways in which marriage, the nuclear family, and female domesticity facilitated Japanese immigration and settlement, and constructed specific roles for Japanese women in the United States. Sonia is the granddaughter of Michiko Ikeda, a Japanese war bride who immigrated to the U.S. in 1952.

Jul 31    Making "Shop Local" Work For Everyone
Through a partnership with the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) we would like to invite our fellow Neighborhood Business Development Centers (NBDCs) to join us for a three-part series of workshops on Making Shop Local Work for Everyone.  The interactive workshops will allow peers to discuss and create a plan to expand your “buy local” or "shop local" campaign into a larger initiative that benefits more businesses in your community.

Workshops topics include:
  • #1 – Building CommunityTuesday, June 26th 2018, 10am – 12pm
To be successful with any program you run, you must first analyze the neighborhood you serve. It is important to understand the culture of your district and identify clear goals for what you want to accomplish. This interactive session will lead you through exercises that will help you clarify the strengths, weaknesses and quirks of the community you serve.
  • #2 – Expanding Beyond Shop Local – Tuesday, July 31st 2018, 10am – 12pm
“Shop Local” has been effective at driving traffic to local retailers, but you want to help all the businesses in your community, right? This interactive session will brainstorm ways to promote more businesses in your neighborhood, so that you leave ready to hit the ground running.
  • #3 – Promoting the Program – Tuesday, August 28th 2018, 10am – 12pm
It's now time to apply what we created in sessions I and II. To be successful with your campaign, you need buy-in throughout your community, which requires effective promotion. This interactive session will look at what resources you have available and will help you assess your resources and craft a tailored promotional campaign that a.) works, and b.) doesn't drain you of valuable time and resources.

Workshops will be facilitated by Big Buzz Idea Group and hosted at Carbon Arc Bar & Board, 4614 N Lincoln Avenue.  For complete details visit www.lincolnsquare.org/building-buy-local-campaigns.

Workshops are FREE for employees of NBDCs and Board Members.  Please RSVP by EOD Friday, June 22nd 2018 via email or provided webpage.
